A man has been arrested after a dramatic daylight police chase along a busy Melbourne freeway during which he leapt from a moving van.

Helicopter vision showed a damaged white van driving erratically through traffic on the West Gate Bridge just before 1pm.

Victoria Police said the van had been reported stolen from St Kilda Road around 5:40am, and was later spotted in Footscray.
