World Health Organization (WHO) regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said on Tuesday that COVID-19 vaccine mandates should be an “absolute last resort” and should only been implemented when all measures to improve vaccine uptake have been exhausted.
Kluge added that any government instituting a mandate or lockdown should also ensure that mental health and well-being are considered, that it is protecting those vulnerable to domestic violence and that micro-economic support is available to those most impacted.
More countries across Europe have been debating whether to make COVID-19 vaccines mandatory after Austria announced its own mandate in November.
