DREAMY sound from this Japanese-American group from New Jersey. This was an awesome find. Still in it’s original mailer, it included a group business card (scan included w/ video) as well as a typed letter introducing the group! Even cooler, the flip side of the record is signed “Compliments of Saby & The Orientals.” I’ve copied the introduction letter word for word below:

"Saby & The Orientals" is a musical group composed of three Japanese-American brothers and two Irish-American boys - all born and raised in Kearny, New Jersey. The band specializes in rock 'n roll but versatility necessitates some jazz, popular and folk numbers in their repertoire.

The band is well known among the Northwestern college set having blazed a popular trail through Rutgers, Union College, Rensselaer and the like. Night clubs in North Jersey have provided specialty crowds for this different rock 'n roll group. Last summer, the New York State Pavilion at the World's Fair was jammed with spectators for a "Japan Day" and to their amazement, in addition to viewing the somewhat more sedate Japanese folk dances, they found themselves moving to Saby's amazing beat.

Yes, "Saby and the Orientals" has provided many surprises. Who would suspect these Far Eastern mystics dressed in blazing red Japanese "Happi Coats" could provide what has been described as a successful blend of California and English rock 'n roll. This is readily recognized on the "Baby Come My Way" side of the record where the whole group alternates between two and four part harmony. On the other side, Eddy Dougherty delivers one of Saby's early compositions, the romantic "Little Girl."

Music is just one facet of the group's talents. Saby Matsushita, rhythm guitarist, composer and leader, is a graduate of Rutgers University with a B.S. in animal science. He works as a medical research technician for St. Michael's hospital in Newark, N.J. Hideo Matsushita, our talented bass player and arranger, recently graduated cum laude from New York University and is a Far East representative for a prominent accounting firm. Tatsy Matsushita (organist) the eldest of the three brothers, is a chemistry graduate of Cornell University and a Navy Lieutenant having served in the Far East and on the West Coast. Currently, he is working for his doctorate in microbiology at the New Jersey COllege of Medicine. Jimmy Flynn in charge of percussion, is a dean's list student in psychology at Union Junior College. Eddy Dougherty, our lead guitarist and most recent member, is a computer operator for Newark Frudential and also a mathematics student at Seton Hall University.
