Manaus became a hub for the rubber trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Even though it's far from the Brazilian core by road, Manaus grew. This was because of
commercial navigation along the Amazon River. It helped with trade and transportation.
Today, many industries are in Manaus. There are manufacturing plants for big
companies like Honda, Samsung, and LG. It's the sixth-largest economy in Brazil.
However, the city has grown quickly. This rapid expansion caused environmental
problems. Informal settlements are spreading into the rainforest. This leads to pollution
and strains the infrastructure.
