Part 2: The Heart of Liyue
This was a really tricky arrangement because of the instrumentation and percussiveness of the piece. If I stuck with the original melody and open percussiveness in the cut time sections, it ends up feeling too open and lacks the dramatic feeling of dense impact in the original. Even in the climax, a lot of the power is actually carried by the percussion and not the instruments. Add to all that the fact that the chord progression isn't super variable because of how much it sits on the tonic C (as a power chord mind you), then the lack of elements to pull from the original becomes really apparent.
My solution was to put the rhythm into the left hand with the note timings and energy/movement with the change in octave. Wherever possible I also tried to keep any embellishments, which is where all the 3 hand parts come in. The jumps in the middle are especially brutal because they're big on both hands a kinda precise. In the final cut time section, I used the left hand to create the feeling of the change in meter and also introduced an additional voice in the right hand to finish out the piece.
I actually really liked playing this one even though it was pretty tricky. The opening feels so mysterious but also dramatic, and once the second part hits it makes me feel really freaking powerful, almost like Rex Lapis himself. When all the notes and jumps land, the feeling is simply sublime.
