Ulysses S. Grant narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by John Wilkes Booth. Grant was supposed to attend a play at Ford Theater, but due to his wife's strained relationship with Lincoln, he decided against it, ultimately avoiding the tragic fate that befell Lincoln.
