We were likely the only group of foreigners in the entire city, and yet no one seems to notice us. No curious glances, no stares—just people going about their day. Are we part of some staged scene, or is there more to this controlled environment than meets the eye? The men and women in dark suits and raincoats look like they’re acting out a script. What’s the deal with the pins they’re all wearing? Is it a symbol of loyalty? Control? Or just an everyday part of life in this highly regulated society?
The streets are wet from the rain, and the reflections of people on the glossy pavement add an almost dreamlike quality to the scene. Despite the modern architecture and the mundane pace of life, there’s an eerie sense that everything is carefully orchestrated for our foreign gaze. As we walk through this city, it leaves me wondering: How much of what we see is real, and how much is staged for the few outsiders who are allowed in?
