Retro Release: 20 years ago today—on August 29, 2005—Opeth released Ghost Reveries, their eighth studio album, recorded 15 March–1 June 2005 at Fascination Street Studios (Örebro, Sweden) and produced by Opeth with Jens Bogren handling production/engineering duties. A sprawling, progressive-metal centerpiece that blends death-metal heft with delicate prog passages and horn/keyboard textures, Ghost Reveries introduces Per Wiberg as a permanent keyboardist and is the last Opeth record to feature drummer Martin Lopez and guitarist Peter Lindgren.
Hear it on the shifting, epic “Ghost of Perdition,” the complex single “The Grand Conjuration,” and the brooding “Beneath the Mire.”
Commercially, the album became Opeth’s most successful release to date in several territories—debuting on the US Billboard 200 at No. 64 (≈15,000 first-week sales), peaking at No. 9 in Sweden, and charting in the UK (No. 62).
