This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the most fuel efficient small or subcompactSUVs you can but from front-wheel-drive (FWD) to all-wheel-drive (AWD), hybrid and plug-in hybrid or PHEV SUVs. The subcompact or small SUV category is the fastest growing category of SUVs do to the lower price to buy one and the better fuel economy they deliver. Small or subcompact SUVs have really replaced the compact car as the preferred mode of getting around but there are some that are more fuel efficient than others. We used the official EPA fuel economy ratings that are used in both the United Sates and Canada, plus we break the fuel economy ratings down in L/100km and US MPG. Some car brands are over represented on our list like Kia with the Soul, Niro and they even have a hybrid and plug-in version of the Kia Niro. Subaru does well on our list with two gasoline models of the Crosstrek scoring very well and Subaru sells a PHEV version the Crosstrek in limited markets. Hon hai, the cousin company to Kia does well with the Venue, very small FWD SUV, plus the Hyundai Kona regular gas model and its turbo Kona.. As one might imagine Toyota does well with the new Corolla Cross gasoline model and they have just announced the Corolla Cross hybrid model with impressive fuel economy numbers, it too makes our list. Toyota also has a FWD only model that is good on gas, the CHR. Nissan has one of the most efficient SUVs on the market and that is the FWD only kicks. Mazda rounds our our brands mentioned with the CX-3 small SUV which has been dropped in the US market but is still sold in Canada, for now...
