Did Pixar cut queer scenes from their new movie Elio?
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Pixar insiders have claimed that Elio was initially portrayed as a “queer coded” character, inspired by the original director Adrian Molina who is an out gay filmmaker.
Insiders referenced a particular scene that never made the final cut where Elio, collected trash on the beach to create homemade outfits, one of which included a pink tank top.
He then showed the look off to a hermit crab as his “trash-ion show”.
Another axed scene reportedly alluded to Elio having a male crush.
At a test screening of the original cut of the film, a source told The Hollywood reporter that the audience were asked if they would see the film in theatres, to which ‘not a single hand was raised.’
Not long after, Adrian Molina exited the project and the film was reworked under new co-directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi.
This is when many of the queer-coded scenes were allegedly scrapped. Pixar assistant editor Sarah Ligatich, who provided feedback during Elio production as a member of the company’s internal LGBTQ group PixPRIDE, told The Hollywood Reporter that she was “deeply saddened and aggrieved by the changes that were made,”.
