Shockwave Lithotripsy (SWL)
Shockwave Lithotripsy (SWL) uses high energy shock waves to treat kidney stones.
Procedure
Imaging with X-Ray or Ultrasound is performed to find the exact location of stones.
The patient will lie on a water filled cushion.
Shock waves from outside the body are targeted at the kidney stones to break it into small pieces.
The fragmented kidney stones are usually passed through the urine.
A ureteral stent may be inserted in the urinary tract before or after the procedure.
Ureteral Stent helps control swelling and allow the kidney to drain urine.
The ureteral stent remains in the body for 4 to 7 days and removed thereafter.
Shockwave Lithotripsy (SWL) typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.
Post-Operative care
Resume normal activity after 24-48 hours
Drink plenty of water
Take medications as prescribed
