The incredible Boss Tremolo/Pan PN-2 plays a vital part in most Shoegaze boards of the 90's and beyond. Here it is used to great chaotic effect in 'Only Shallow' by MBV. 4 different rates of tremolo were processed through an Akai S1000 Sampler with some takes being reversed. A masterclass of manipulating acoustic to his benefit, Shields wanted to create a direct sound standing wave that functioned as a CONSTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE by placing a microphone in between two fully cranked up amplifiers. The PN-2 has a variety of different waveforms that can be selected making it extremely synth-like. It also offers two outputs which allows you to combine amplifiers, in order to create those luscious Shoegaze textures and stereo image, not just in the studio, but when playing live aswell.
