Sony PlayStation’s MUSIC 2000 had an understated release in 1999, dwarfed by the consoles' other titles that year. However, the game came to be a hugely important and influential piece of technology for the development of underground music genres like Grime, Dubstep and Jungle. At the time, it made a quasi-music studio accessible and helped young and emerging artists bypass the gatekeepers of the ‘urban’ music industry.
But what's the story of the game, and why was it such a crucial release for early Grime producers?
Sub_Terrain digs deep into pockets of the underground music scene, unearthing the stories and timelines beneath the genres that shape contemporary culture. For Episode 4 of the series, we join music journalist and BIMM Institute alumnus Punit Kavia in his exploration into a truly underrated piece of music technology.
