Since the Albanese government was elected, government spending as a share of GDP has jumped up about three per cent, according to George Washington University Assistant Professor Steven Hamilton. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has begun preparing for a May election following advice from Treasurer Jim Chalmers, who has pushed for a budget-focused campaign.
“That’s the fastest run-up in government spending since the Whitlam government,” Mr Hamilton told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood.
