🌊 Mahone Bay Day Trip Guide: Food, Trails, History & Surprises | Nova Scotia South Shore Vlog 🚗🦞🍺

Exploring Mahone Bay – Our First Impressions & Getting There 🌅🚗

Good morning from beautiful Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia! We set out on a day trip just 10 minutes from Lunenburg, excited to explore this picturesque South Shore town. As we arrived, we were instantly charmed by its walkability, colorful historic buildings, inviting restaurants, breweries, and vibrant harbor views. The weather was windy but sunny, setting the perfect mood for a full day of discovery. We parked conveniently across from one of Mahone Bay’s iconic three churches—St. James Anglican, St. John’s Lutheran, and Trinity United—each famous for helping sailors navigate these waters.

Seafood Heaven: Clams & Lobster Mac at Oh My Cod 🦞🍟

Our appetites led us to an early lunch at the whimsically named "Oh My Cod." Here, we indulged in lobster and shrimp mac & cheese—creamy, cheesy, and decadent, with big chunks of lobster and an aged cheese finish that set the bar high. On the other side of the table, we dove into a mountain of legendary Digby clams and chips, served up salty and crisp with tartar sauce.

The Mystery of Oak Island: Treasure, Legends & Detours 🏝️💰

No South Shore trip is complete without a detour to the famed Oak Island—home of The Curse of Oak Island TV show and endless treasure legends. While we had hoped to visit the interpretive center and learn about its pirate lore and rumored riches, we were met with closed gates and “No Trespassing” signs.

Rum Runners Trail: Hiking, History & Scenery 🚲🌲

Returning to Mahone Bay, we laced up our shoes for a walk along the Rum Runners Trail—a 119-kilometer path connecting Halifax to Lunenburg, famous for its role during prohibition when rum-runners smuggled booze along these tracks.

Chasing Culture: Mahone Bay Museum & Local Craft 🏛️🔍

Eager to learn more, we aimed for the Mahone Bay Museum—only to find out it’s open by appointment (tip: email or message them 24 hours ahead for a private tour and a deep dive into local history). We admired the reviews and friendly guides, promising ourselves a return visit.

Saltbox Brewing: Local Craft Beer Flights 🍻☀️

As afternoon sun poured over Mahone Bay, we found ourselves at Saltbox Brewing Company for a well-earned tasting flight. The local favorite “Crustacean Elation” lobster ale was a quirky highlight, followed by apple cider, sour rhubarb ale, bold IPAs, and bourbon barrel-aged stouts.

Coffee Break at The Barn & East Coast Lifestyle Finds ☕🍩

After our brew stop, we were off to The Barn, Mahone Bay’s artsy coffee shop with a “secret garden” patio. Over cappuccinos, London fog teas, and cinnamon buns, we recharged and tried their “Everything Ball”—a peanut-buttery, seed-packed energy treat. Our East Coast Lifestyle shirt, with its Bluenose 2 design, became our favorite Nova Scotia souvenir, a perfect blend of tradition and local pride.

Shopping & Souvenirs: Amos Pewter & The Civic Marina 🎁⛵

Locals insisted we visit Amos Pewter, where we watched artisans create pewter ornaments and jewelry—a tradition dating back to ancient times. We couldn’t resist picking up a handcrafted Christmas ornament as a keepsake. We also strolled the civic marina, dreaming about life on the water as boats bobbed in the breeze.

Dinner at Mateus Bistro: Mussels, Chowder, & Live Music 🎶🍲

For dinner, we headed to Mateus Bistro, a beloved local spot with rave reviews and a chef from Bratislava. We shared mussels in white wine, followed by their award-winning seafood chowder, brimming with mussels, fish, potatoes, and aromatic herbs. The smoked chicken penne, paired with a local Shiraz, was the perfect finale, all set to the backdrop of live music.
