You may think this ship is simply chilling on the beach, but it was actually stuck on one of the most important coral reef areas in the world! This is the Tubbataha Reef in the middle of the Sulu Sea in the Philippines, a UNESCO-recognized, extremely biodiverse with high concentration of marine species globally. It's a pristinely preserved coral reef that’s very crucial - for science! The term "Tubbataha" comes from a combination of two Sama-Bajau words: "tubba" and "taha," meaning "a long reef exposed at low tide." Now, this picture was taken in 2013 when the US Navy minesweeper USS Guardian accidentally damaged itself from the reef before it ran aground at Tubbataha, damaging at least 2,000 square meters of the reef. The ship was so severely damaged that it was no longer operational and had to be removed from Tubbataha by cutting it into small pieces. Thankfully, two months later, the last piece of the ship was finally removed from the reef, with the US paying the Philippines 87 million pesos.
