Hello from us here in the French countryside! Three videos ago, Philippe started restoring our old Thwaites dumper built somewhere between the 60s and 80s which we’ve used heavily for all the groundworks in front of and behind the barns as we tackle water issues across the property. Though it had moved tons of soil especially to where our future pond will be it was clearly worn down and in need of care. It was Philippe’s first time dismantling an engine, and after many evenings spent researching and scrubbing, he learned the engine wasn’t broken just very tired. Piece by piece, he’s been rebuilding it carefully. Last time, he got as far as the cylinders. This week, the inlet and exhaust manifolds go on after a good scrub along with the alternator and fuel filter.
The dumper’s back section had also been welded shut by a previous owner, sealing off airflow to its air-cooled engine. So Philippe’s redoing it to match the original design ensuring proper ventilation and easier access going forward. He’s also sorting out the tank mounts, which had previously failed as they were mounted on the flimsiest brackets possible and caused damage to the alternator.

And then there’s the fuel pump which turned into one of the most fiddly parts of the whole job, needing to be reassembled three times before it was just right. Once this machine is running again, it’ll be the key to restarting our two biggest jobs: the driveway and the excavation behind the barn. We’re almost there.

Next up, with the excavator, Philippe starts flattening soil near the future pond and Odin joins him. At one point, Philippe gently guides him to take over the controls. And I have to say watching that moment unfold, my mama heart could hardly take it.

Come along this week, as the pieces fall into place and we edge closer tot he next goal.
