Heart failure is a condition that occurs when the heart can’t pump as well as it should. This may happen when the heart muscle becomes weak or stiff. As a result, it doesn’t deliver enough blood to the rest of the body.
Heart failure can become life-threatening, so the condition requires medical attention.

MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT:

Heart Failure
Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood to meet the body’s requirement.

The heart is a strong, muscular organ which pumps the right amount of blood to all parts of the body.

The heart has four chambers:
* Two upper chambers called atria
* Two lower chambers called ventricles

The right atrium takes in oxygen-depleted blood from the rest of the body
and sends it through the right ventricle to the lungs.
Lungs infuse the blood with oxygen.

Oxygen-rich blood travels from the lungs to the left atrium, then on to the left ventricle.
Which pumps it to the rest of the body.

For the heart to work properly, the four chambers must beat in an organized way.

Types
1.Left-sided heart failure
In left-sided or left ventricular heart failure, the left side must work harder to pump the same amount of blood.
There are two types of left-sided heart failure:
* Systolic failure: The left ventricle loses its ability to contract normally. The heart can't pump with enough force to push enough blood into circulation.
* Diastolic failure: The left ventricle loses its ability to relax normally as the muscle has become stiff. The heart can't properly fill with blood during the resting period between each beat.

2. Right-sided heart failure
Right-sided or right ventricular heart failure usually occurs as a result of left-sided failure.
When the left ventricle fails and can’t pump enough blood out, increased fluid pressure is transferred back through the lungs.
This damages the heart’s right side.
When the right side loses pumping power, blood backs up in the body’s veins.

3.Congestive heart failure (CHF)
As blood flow out of the heart slows, blood returning to the heart through the veins backs up.
This causes swelling (Edema) in the body's tissues. Often in the legs and feet.
Fluid may also collect in the lungs causing shortness of breath.
Eventually, heart failure may affect the kidneys, further increasing fluid accumulation in the body.
