Confused about inversions? I can cure that! It means to turn something upside down. How does that apply in music? When you have 2 notes a certain distance apart and you raise the lower one by an octave, your note names haven’t changed, but your distance between them has! This is what we mean by an inversion. In this lesson I explain what an inversion is, give you two ways to think about them, and show you the key to memorizing all of your inversion quickly and easily…right now!

💡 LESSON TOPICS

♪ To invert a pair of notes you raise the bottom one up by an octave (or lower the top one down by an octave). The note names are still the same but the interval between them has changed. The original interval - the distance between the notes - is said to have been “inverted.”
♪ Another way to think about inverting 2 notes is to call the upper note number 1
♪ Intervals invert in pairs with predictable rules
♪ Numbered pairs are 2 and 7, 3 and 6, 4 and 5
♪ When an interval is inverted: Major turns into minor, minor turns into major, and perfect remains perfect
♪ The “tritone” is the same as the #4 or flat 5. Each inverts into the other one, but is still called a tritone.

🧑 ABOUT ME
My name is Alex, and my passion is teaching music online. I’m a bass player and composer by training and trade, but what I really love to do is teach. I make my living teaching private lessons on Bass, Guitar, Piano, and Ukulele. My favorite thing to teach is theory - helping the students understand the “why” behind the music and empowering them to make better and more informed musical choices. I’m very adamant about teaching technique. This is how you gain power and control over your instrument and ultimately raise the ceiling on where your limits are and where they will be in the future.

I appreciate you participating in learning music with me, either for free through my videos or in private lessons in my virtual studio. Players of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome! There’s no music lesson I don’t love.
