The time-worn, seized window had been untouched for 40 years. However, the real concern was the wall below, which had a history of repairs and was precariously close to a vent leading to the caves below. It posed a collapse risk due to trapped moisture and poor cement work. Both side walls had their own history of shoddy repairs, leaving us uncertain about what lay beneath.
Caught in a catch-22, we had to choose between removing the offending cement and losing our cooking facilities or living with the problems.
The uninsulated ceiling added to our woes, making the open-plan room difficult to heat in winter. Should we go all in and upgrade the heating and insulation? Deciding whether to rip down and insulate a perfectly good ceiling, is a big decision. We were proud of our kitchen, despite its blatant damp issues, which had persisted even after fixing the gutter and lime mortaring on the house's exterior.
As anticipated, the project wasn't simple and things escalated quickly. My intuition was spot on and soon our beloved kitchen was buried under rubble and our hand-made units were torn down. The window remained untouched, a testament to the chaos that ensued.
