The Labour Party is at the centre of a major controversy following the Supreme Court’s ruling, which nullified the Court of Appeal’s judgment recognising Julius Abure as the National Chairman. In its unanimous decision, the Apex Court stated that the appellate court lacked the jurisdiction to rule on internal party leadership matters, deeming these to be beyond the courts' authority. However, the court also noted that Abure’s term as Chairman had expired.
Abure’s camp welcomed the ruling, arguing it confirms that political matters should remain internal party affairs. However, they assert that the judgment does not remove Abure from his position as National Chairman. To provide further insight, we are joined by Abayomi Arabambi, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary from the Abure faction, and Fred Nzeako, a constitutional lawyer, who examine the implications of this judgment, the Labour Party constitution on party leadership, and the recurring legal battles over political disputes.
