Why is the Philippines is called: The Philippines? It’s commonly believed that Ferdinand Magellan was the one who named the country, but it was actually the Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos. In 1543, Villalobos named the islands "Las Islas Filipinas" or the Philippine Islands after Spanish crown prince Philip, later King Philip II. Although Villalobos only named these islands, It took decades for the name Filipinas to be widely recognized and accepted during Spanish colonial rule lasting 333 years. Over the years, the islands formed a unified country known as the “Republica Filipina”, later referred to as the “Philippine Islands” during the US Occupation, and now officially recognized as The Republic of the Philippines.
