It's because of The Gambia.

This is the most oddly shaped country in Africa. You see, this is the Gambia River, and The Gambia's border follows the path of the river inland. The country is completely surrounded by Senegal, and looking at the two, it looks like someone stole this land from Senegal. But no, this is another example of how colonialism affected Africa. Senegal was a French colony, and The Gambia was a British colony.

The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa by land area, with 11,300 square kilometers. This island in the middle of the river, called Kunta Kinteh or Fort James, was once owned by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
