In 2019, a diplomatic row erupted between France and Italy over increased migration to Europe, with Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio accusing France of impoverishing African countries, stating that “If today we still have people leaving Africa, it is due to several European countries, first of all France, that didn't finish colonizing Africa”. He further said that France was controlling the economies of 14 African countries that use the CFA franc, a CFA franc-backed currency pegged to the Euro.
