ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
From the zazous of the 1940s to the landmark Chope des Puces, via the mythical figure of Django Reinhardt, gypsy jazz is governed by a history, places, and unforgettable names. Featured on the bill of the Nancy Jazz Pulsations festival, Stochelo Rosenberg is no exception to this brilliant melting pot. Discovered by violinist Stéphane Grappelli, with Biréli Lagrène and during the famous gatherings at Samois-sur-Seine in Ile-de-France, the Dutch guitarist is now presenting his latest project, Gypsy Today. A balance point between improvised music and the melodies dear to nomads, this band with an attractive repertoire naturally wins over audiences.
This feeling is guaranteed when listening to “Double Scotch”, a piece by Django Reinhardt whose melodic aspects are reminiscent of “Jack, You’re Dead”, the standard of the great Louis Jordan; in "Made For Isaac", an original composition with high cinematographic content; and via “Memories of Bridget”, a tender ballad written by Stochelo Rosenberg for his own daughter. Far from evoking an old-fashioned attitude, the golden-fingered guitarist knows how to regenerate house culture through modern arrangements. This particularity is evident in the adventurous “Double Jeu” and the eloquent “Gypsylogy”, two musical themes where the sophisticated phrasing of pianist Jermaine Landsberger stands out.
