MUSIC OF ITALY - TARENTELLA DANCE
The music of Italy ranges across a broad spectrum of opera and instrumental classical music, the traditional styles of the country's different regions, and a body of popular music drawn from both native and imported sources. The tarantella as traditional music of Naples, Calabria and Salento (Puglia) was developed by popular songs created by anonymous folks and are part of the Italian 19th century style.
The stately courtship tarantella is danced by a couple or couples, short in duration, graceful and elegant, and features characteristic music. The supposedly curative or symptomatic tarantella is danced solo by a supposed victim of a "tarantula" bite, agitated in character, may last from hours to days, and features characteristic music.
