I’m honored to share something truly special with you.
Waro is a traditional saiti (ceremonial song) from the Yawanawa people, deep in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. It’s from the debut album of Ninunihu & Yaka Yawanawa, powerful voices of their culture, carrying forward ancestral prayers through music.
My friend and collaborator Raio traveled to the jungle to study Yawanawa music and drop deep into their ceremonies. Amidst the lush forest and the deep connection of the ritual, he recorded the original vocals — not in a studio, but in the jungle itself, surrounded by the living pulse of the Earth.
When Raio returned to his home studio in Bali, he reached out to me to help bring these recordings into a new form. Together, we carefully shaped this remix with deep respect and intention, not to change the spirit of the song, but to amplify its reach — to invite more people into this prayer through rhythm, melody, and movement.
Throughout the creative process we were also navigating what it means to collaborate with indigenous culture with the deepest care and respect. Permission is humbly requested, not assumed, and a dialogue with the elders is necessary. Will they feel our love of the culture and positive intentions in the production, or just see it as an outside form of expression that erodes the depth of the tradition?
We shared about the alcohol-free spaces we both create for pure dance expression with a spiritual dimension, and about how there is a movement of conscious celebration sweeping the world right now that needs songs like this to deepen and anchor the collective prayer potential.
In the end they felt the love, appreciated the music, and permission was given to share this song with the world. We are so grateful for the opportunity to connect and collaborate with stewards of such ancient magic.
Yawanawa ceremonies are pure sacred celebration, filled with joy, connection, and collective presence. The dancing goes strong all through the night. So it's only fitting that the chant finds a musical form destined to ignite conscious dance floors all over the planet.
Waro is a celebration of life, a reminder of what humans have always done together — dance, sing, and give thanks. The phrase “Só Alegria” — only joy — says it all.
We invite you to listen, move, and receive the medicine of this song.
