Join British Physicist Brian Cox, as he talks about one of NASA’s Dart Mission (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) which was one of the most important missions of NASA to deflect an Asteroid. DART was the first-ever mission for investigating and demonstrating one method of Asteroid deflection by changing an Asteroid’s motion in space through an impact called ‘Kinetic Impact’.
In this clip he starts by giving an example of how Dinosaurs went extinct by a Big Asteroid named ‘The Chicxulub’ which hit earth 65 Million Years ago. Moreover he adds that occasionally big pieces of Asteroids hit the Earth and occasionally that big pieces of rocks are big enough to cause Mass Devastation.
So to save Earth from Asteroids we look at them with quiet sensibility and we map the orbit of big Asteroids around the Earth. What you need to do is nudge it a bit so it doesn’t hit the Earth. And the Dart Mission of NASA was the first ever mission designed to make sure that we can change the orbit of an Asteroid. At the end he says that we haven’ done it with “A Double Asteroid System” in which one of Asteroid was hit by the Dart mission spacecraft. After that it changed the orbit of that Asteroid.
