Ever since the haunting songs of whales were first captured by accident in the 1950s, scientists have wondered: Could we ever speak to another species?

In the latest episode of Scientific Controversies, PW Founding Director of Sciences Janna Levin sat down with David Gruber, Founder & President of Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), and Dr. Joy S. Reidenberg, a comparative anatomist specializing in the vocal and respiratory systems of mammals. Together, they explore the challenges of communicating with whales and what the large creatures may teach us about intelligence, consciousness, and social bonds.
