We hear a lot about the first woman to achieve a historic goal, after several men have already taken the same opportunity. The first woman in space, first female doctor, or first woman elected president. Massive respect to Valentina Tereshkova, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell and the hundreds of women who have been elected head of state or government in 113 countries world wide. But today I want to look at instances where the first person ever to achieve a historic goal happened to be a woman. This list was sadly, but unsurprisingly rather hard to compile. But I’ve managed to come up with 10 women from science, art, politics and sport who where the first to shatter a variety of glass ceilings. The first Chemist, first novelist, first computer programmer and first car thief were all women. Let’s meet them and celebrate their incredible achievements.
1. First Chemist: Tapputi (1200 BCE)
2. First University Founder: Fatima al-Fihri (859)
3.
First Novel: The Tale of Genji, by Murasaki Shikibu (1021)
4. First Science Fiction: Mary Shelley (1818)
5. First Computer Program: Ada Lovelace (1843)
6. First Car Theft: Betha Benz (1888)
7. First Double Nobel Prize: Marie Curie (1911)
8. First Rock Star: Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1930s)
9. First Chair of the UN Human Rights Commission: Eleanor Roosevelt (1948)
10. First Olympic Gymnastics Perfect 10: Nadia Comaneci (1976)
