In 2017, the United States went up in uproar after four US soldiers were killed in a failed operation in Niger. This operation, called the Tongo Tongo ambush or Niger ambush occurred on October 4th, 2017, when militants from the Islamic in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) attacked a troop of soldiers from Niger and the US near the village of Tongo Tongo, Niger. According to reports, the soldiers were returning to their base after a stop in the village, when the ambush occurred, resulting in the death of four Nigerien soldiers, four US soldiers, and at least 21 ISGS militants, with several wounded. This attack brought to the world’s notice the presence of US forces in Africa and the secret military bases stationed around Africa. Investigations into the incident revealed that the US Special Forces team was ill-prepared for the mission. It also revealed that a prominent ISGS Commander, Abu Huzeifa also known as Higgo, played a key role in the attack. This prompted the US State Department to announce a bounty of $5 million to anyone who has information about him. Since then, the US has failed to catch this notorious militant.
