Detroit DJ Shorty B Plays Dance Music Vinyl from the Year He Started Spinning Records (1985) on Classic Realistic 32-1200 DJ Mixer (aka Radio Shack No. 2).

In this Mix, Detroit DJ Shorty B (full name: Shorty B - The Michigan Madd Man, as named by an Army Buddy in 1989), mixes music from the year he started spinning records, 1985. He mixes these tracks in the Detroit Style, as named by him when he mixed abroad during his years of world travel courtesy of the Army…People and other DJs would say “You mix different” DJ Shorty B would say “I Mix DETROIT STYLE”. DJ Shorty B learned to mix in this style by watching DJs mix in the basements and backyards in his Northwest Detroit neighborhood, listening to the Wizard, Duane In The Mix Bradley, on the radio, and listening to the many mixtapes that circulated around Detroit from the many talented DJs in Techno City. Special shout out to Cecil Shepard, Tyrone Smith, Carlos Simpson (R.I.P.), Big Jeff on Archdale, TP, and my Homie Troy from Fenmore - His step-pops was a DJ and we used to mix on the equipment in the basement.

“In this Mix, I use a very special Mixer, the Realistic 32-1200 Stereo Mixing Console, aka Realistic Mixer Number 2, aka Radio Shack Mixer Number 2. My first mixer was actually the Realistic Number 1 (32-1100), which was the model with no crossfader.
According to the manual, the Realistic 32-1200 Mixer was released in 1980. When I first became interested in DJing in 1984, The 32-1200 was the mixer I saw in the basements and backyard parties, before the Numarks started popping up. Carlos Simpson was the first one I saw with the 19” Numark. When he got that mixer, he gave me his Teledyne stereo mixer with a crossfader…that was a come up, coming from the 32-1100.

I never owned this mixer in my beginning days as a DJ, but I played on it and made tapes on it. Saw it first in my neighborhood homie, Cecil's basement (first time I met TP). Big jeff from Archdale used to let me mix on it and make tapes, unsupervised, in his basement…TP let me spin on one at a backyard party in NW Detroit, and there was another Kat that had one - he lived on Fenmore, across 6 Mile near the dead end by the gas station…can’t recall his name though…I just remember he had that mixer and Cerwin Vega speakers. I lusted after this mixer during the year i had the model with no crossfader, but when I got the Teledyne, I was content, and held it until I started making Army money and got a Pyramid 4 channel, that bit the style of the Numark 19” rack mount mixer.

I hope you enjoy this mix…I enjoyed making it, and tried to mix it in the style I mixed in back in the day. There's something special about mixing on raw, organic, vintage, analog gear…no effects, knobs, eq’s, filters, bells or whistles…just a mixer, some turntables and some records. This Mix was done in one take…Every blend is not perfect, which makes the mix so great…it's REAL! No retakes, no multi track, no computer, no cut, paste, or edit - just unadulterated mixing.
PEACE…BLESS-ONE!”

Detroit DJ Shorty B is available for booking in Michigan from Detroit to Traverse City - and Worldwide!
