Ladakh's First Botanical Garden | Shyok River | News In Focus | The Study IAS
Ladakh is now home to its first-ever Botanical Garden, set to come up in the Shayok village of Durbuk Tehsil — a strategically located area along the Darbuk–Shyok–DBO road, near the Shyok River. 🌿 Situated at 3,700m above sea level on the ancient Silk Route, this region is ecologically sensitive and geopolitically vital.
This Botanical Garden, expected to be completed by 2029, will focus on rare, endemic, and medicinal plants, and is part of Ladakh’s “Go Green, Go Organic” initiative. It aims to boost conservation, research, education, and community engagement in the fragile cold desert ecosystem.
The project is backed by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), India’s premier plant research body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, established in 1890.
Fun fact: 🌊 Did you know the Shyok River is also called the “River of Death” due to its unpredictable and dangerous flow? It plays a key role both in biodiversity and in India’s northern border security.
