A group of people who were injured in the July-August mass uprising on Wednesday took position in front of the chief adviser’s office at Tejgaon in Dhaka city over demand for the removal of Category C from the list the interim government has made for the uprising injured.
With the objective of providing assistance, the list of the injured has been created according to the severity of their injuries and health condition.
A protester named Md Liton told New Age at about 4:30pm on the day that they marched to the CA office and took position in front of it at about 12:15pm.
Soheli Tamanna, who was injured on the morning of August 5 in the city’s Chankharpool area, said that she had a fracture in her left hand and would need to take medicine for the rest of her life.
‘We have only one demand—there will be only two categories—A and B,’ she added.
Another protester, Monir Hossain, said that around 22,000 people were injured in the uprising, but only 2,000 of them were enlisted under Categories A and B, while the rest fell under Category C.
The protesters repeatedly took to the streets pressing their one-point demand.
For ensuring treatment and giving other necessary assistance to the injured of the July-August mass uprising, the government has categorised the severely injured victims under Category A to provide them with lifelong medical care, a monthly allowance of Tk 20,000, and a one-time payment of Tk 5 lakh.
Individuals in Category B, who have lost a limb, will receive Tk 15,000 monthly allowance and a one-time payment of Tk 3 lakh. Under the Category C, injured victims who have recovered after treatment, will be prioritised for employment and rehabilitation programmes but will not receive any allowance.
According to the government data which is still being updated, 834 people were killed and 11,551 were injured during the mass uprising. The government is still updating the data.
