Today we’re comparing the new JHS Hard Drive distortion pedal against four of my other favorite high gain drive: the ProCo Rat 2, the Revv G3, the Boss Metal Zone, and the Joyo Uzi!

The Hard Drive is JHS’s first modern-flavored high gain distortion, and it sounds so beefy and massive in the videos about it that I just had to try it for myself! In particular, I was impressed by the Hard Drive’s apparent ability to sound like many other high gain drives, while also having its own voice.

In their video, JHS compare it to a Marshall Shredmaster, a ProCo Rat, a Boss DS-1, an AmpTweaker Tight Metal, a Friedman BE-OD, and an Ibanez SM-7 Smash Box, and it nails them all. As it would, of course, being in the official JHS promo.

But in this video, I thought it’d be fun to try the same thing with a few of my own favorite high gain drives. And this is actually my first experience with the pedal too – I’d not even turned it on before filming this loop, so you’re really hearing me tweak it on the fly!

The other pedals I chose for this test are the legendary Boss Metal Zone – which some people say the Hard Drive is based on because of the similar control set – the ProCo Rat 2, the Revv G3, and the Joyo Uzi, which itself is an affordable Friedman BE-OD clone.

How will they all compare? And will I be able to get the Hard Drive to sound anything like the Metal Zone? Watch on to find out, and let me know which of the five pedals you think sounds best in the comments!

My setup was as follows: I ran the pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loops. Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
