Carmen's first two solo singles, released in 1976, both drew from the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff. The first "All by Myself," was based on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, while the follow-up "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again," was inspired by the third movement of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2. Other notable hits include "Almost Paradise," which he co-wrote as the love theme for the film Footloose, and "Hungry Eyes," featured in Dirty Dancing.
Carmen was married three times, and his last wife Amy Carmen announced that he had died in his sleep over the previous weekend at the age of 74, on March 11, 2024. No cause or location of death was given. His widow Amy filed further lawsuits against all public authorities to block the release of an autopsy.
Following Carmen's death, his children filed a lawsuit against their step-mother, Amy Carmen, accusing her of wrongly disinheriting them from a trust their father had established in 2007. Subsequently, after Amy Carmen's attorneys filed to have the case moved to Federal Court, they filed responses to these claims.
