For the last five years I’ve had a personal policy of getting in 10-20 minutes of guitar improvisation every day. Well, almost every day. There is the occasional day or week when I am away from the guitar, but every day that I can I pick it up and go on a little exploration.

It’s a flexible and fluid time…it might start as an improv and then veer into a more microscopic look at something that tripped me up and took me out of the flow. “Can I refine that?” Or I might stumble on a melodic fragment that I want to hang out on. Or I might just work through the chords of a song that I like.

The big idea is to keep my fingers and mind supple, to not get bogged down or discouraged that I couldn’t get in a sweaty two hour practice session. If my practice plans are too ambitious for the current season, I can get discouraged, like I’m not meeting my personal quota. And truthfully, at this stage of my development I’ll take 15 or 20 minutes of playing music to an hour of running scales with a metronome.

That’s why I shot this 8 minute improvisation…to show the practice and to be real…leave in the warts and and the lulls.

If you are interested in going deeper on a practice like this, check out my FREE course, How to Grow as a Guitar Player in 15 Minutes a Day:
