Why will Istanbul become an island !?
As you already know, Istanbul is located on the left bank of the Bosphorus Strait which is the only way in and out of the black sea.
More ships pass through here than through Panama and Suez combined, making the Bosphorus one of the busiest strait in the world, but unlike the other two, Turkey does not collect taxes from passing ships.
In 1936, Turkey signed the Montreux convention that restricts the entering of military ships, except those of the countries bordering the Black Sea , but allow free passage for the commercial ones.
To bypass the Montreux convention, Turkey decided to build The Istanbul Canal. A 45 kilometers long waterway where Turkey can charge for ships passing through. Also, vessels will no longer wait days for passing between Black Sea and The Marmara Sea making them more willing to pay for passing through the canal.
If finished, this entire area, including the left side of the city of Istanbul will become an island.
