Description:

Cyprus is often associated with this island in the Mediterranean Sea, largely due to its recognizable flag. However, the reality is far more complex, as the flag doesn't fully represent the island's territorial divisions.

Cyprus comprises four distinct territorial entities. The Republic of Cyprus, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and two British military bases that are officially British territory. Additionally, there's a narrow strip of land separating the two republics: a United Nations buffer zone maintained by UN peacekeeping forces.

Why such division? After gaining independence from the British Empire in 1960, Cyprus controlled most of the island except for the two British military bases. Plans for Cyprus's annexation to Greece emerged soon after, prompting Turkey to invade the island to prevent this. Turkey seized control of the northern part, declaring it the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, an independent country. To maintain peace, the UN established the buffer zone along the border between the two regions.
