TLDR My first encounter with death came at 16 when my uncle was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The eldest of five, he was a patriarch in his own right and one of the few positive male figures in my life. His illness threw the family into chaos. My mom commuted two hours daily to be by his side, while I struggled through school, offering support where I could.
It was a dark time. I worried about my mom, my family, and what his absence would mean. Heavy thoughts for a clueless 16-year-old. My escape? Borrowing my mom’s car, blasting music, and losing myself in the streets of my Uncle Robert’s neighborhood. Music was—and still is—my spirit guide. Back then, before streaming, your soundtrack was limited to the CDs you could buy, burn, or rip. And one CD was always on repeat for me: Snot – Get Some.
