Finding Turtles in Shallow Ponds
Use a 5-prong fork to find wild turtles in muddy ponds. Press the fork into wet soil at a 45° angle. Check spots near the shore where water is shallow. Good areas show oval marks (8-10cm wide) or bubble trails in mud.
How to Probe
Push the center prong 15cm deep to feel for hard shells. Move side prongs (2nd/3rd) at 30° angles to sense round edges. Lightly scrape outer prongs (4th/5th) just under mud surface. When you hit something hard:
A turtle feels bouncy and round
Rocks feel stiff with no curve
Hand Capture Method
If you find a turtle:
Dig with hands 10cm from spot
Make a circle around the hard object
Grab the turtle’s back edge firmly
Thumb on top shell
Fingers under belly
Lift quickly from water
Helpful Tips
Pour warm water (35°C) upstream; turtles move toward heat
Best time: Afternoon (25-28°C water)
Work slowly to keep mud clear
Always wear waterproof gloves
This simple method helps find turtles safely.
