STORYLINE:
A Philippine police official was one of the passengers killed onboard the American Airlines plane that collided with an Army Blackhawk helicopter in the United States, the Philippine police said Friday.

Police Col. Pergentino Malabed Jr., who headed the supply management division of the National Police, traveled to the U.S. to inspect equipment the Philippines was planning to purchase for its 232,000-member force.

“His untimely passing is a profound loss to the Philippine National Police, where he served with honor, with integrity and dedication throughout his career,” said Police Colonel Randulf Tuaño, Philippine National Police spokesperson.

It was not clear if his body has been retrieved from the wreckage in the icy Potomac River, where the Bombardier CRJ700 plunged after the mid-air collision.
