Two months after newly commissioned officer Julie Bentz (B.S. radiological health, '86) graduated from Oregon State she headed to Europe to help with the Chernobyl disaster. Years later, Bentz, who would retire as a major general, was among the first to get a call in 2011 when Japan experienced the Fukushima nuclear disaster. She credits her experiences at Oregon State, and her willingness to try and fail and try again, with instilling in her the leadership skills that carried her to a long service career including 9 years at the White House.
