Large parts of Japan have been covered in snow, with this winter's lowest temperatures disrupting rail and air travel. Warnings have been issued for more heavy snowfall expected through the weekend. Residents struggled to dig out cars buried by snow, with the meteorological agency calling the cold front the "strongest in several years." Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, and the Japan Sea coast have been the most affected, leading domestic airlines to cancel flights between cities in the region and Tokyo. Train services in parts of central Japan were also suspended. Several roads were closed due to the snow, prompting officials to advise motorists to use snow tyres.
