These are the thousands of American and Filipino prisoners in the Bataan Death March that surrendered to the Japanese in World War 2, and this would also mark the Japanese era in the Philippines. A month after the Attack on Pear Harbor, Japan swiftly attacked two American fortresses in the Philippines: Bataan and Corregidor. The Battle of Bataan and Corregidor saw intense fighting, disease, and starvation, and on April 9, 1942, the Americans were forced to surrender, resulting in tens of thousands of soldiers becoming prisoners of war on the Bataan Death March. The fall of Bataan and Corregidor marked the Japanese era in the Philippines. This important moment in Philippine history is remembered every year during the Araw ng Kagitingan.
