For the creation of this list, we compiled a selection of dozens of famous British bands and gathered information about each of them from the Billboard Hot 100™ to establish a ranking of the 20 most successful British bands.
We want to clarify upfront that this is not a "best of" list; it simply reflects the results obtained through the methodology outlined in this description.

The Billboard Hot 100™ is a weekly music chart that ranks the 100 most popular songs in the United States. It is one of the most important rankings in the music industry.
There are 3 key fields in the bands' profiles on the Billboard website:
• No. 1 Hits: Indicates the number of songs that reached the 1st place on the chart. For each song in this category, we awarded 10 points.
• Top 10 Hits: Shows the number of songs that ranked within the top 10 positions. For each song in this category, we awarded 5 points.
• Songs: Refers to the total number of songs that made it onto the chart, regardless of position. For each song in this category, we awarded 2 points.
The tiebreaker criterion we used was the total number of songs that entered the chart. If the tie persisted, we multiplied the best-performing result by the number of weeks it remained on the charts.
For this list, we had 2 instances where tiebreakers were necessary:
The first was for the 20th place. The tie was between The Clash, Oasis, and Procol Harum, each with 11 points, but The Clash had the best-performing song with 24 weeks on the chart, followed by Oasis with 20 weeks, and Procol Harum with 12 weeks.
The second instance was for the 15th place, between Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, but Led Zeppelin's total number of songs on the Billboard Hot 100™ exceeded that of Pink Floyd.
Exclusions for not fitting the purpose of the list:
• If you were to consider Coldplay a rock band, it would have ranked 4th on this list. However, since we believe it is more accurate to classify them as a pop band, we decided to exclude them from this list.
• Solo artists were also not included, as the focus here is on bands.
The data provided here can be verified on the Billboard website. Simply enter "www.billboard.com/artist/" followed by the band name you wish to search, without spaces and separated by hyphens. Example: www.billboard.com/artist/dire-straits
