John Lennon’s teenage years are explored in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s (formerly Sam Taylor Wood) directorial debut, the Film4-backed Nowhere Boy.
Set in 1950s Liverpool, Lennon (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) finds himself in the crossfire between his Aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his mother Julia (Anne-Marie Duff) when he meets kindred spirit Paul McCartney (Thomas Sangster) and their famous partnership forms the band that became The Beatles.
In our interview special, Sam Taylor-Johnson discusses the ‘guttural instinct’ she had to make the film upon reading the script, and how they avoided mimicry and instead crafted it into an embodiment of the spirit and soul of Lennon. Kristin Scott Thomas expresses the joy of working with young actors and portraying Aunt Mimi’s complex and emotive personality. And Aaron Taylor Johnson delves into the research and preparation that went into his role as John Lennon.
