The Hollow Square Formation was a military tactic that revolutionized defensive warfare during the Napoleonic Era. Designed to protect infantry against cavalry attacks, this formation involved soldiers arranging themselves into a square, with all sides facing outward and the center left hollow. It was a tactical masterpiece that provided 360-degree defense.

Each corner of the square was reinforced with artillery, and the hollow center was reserved for commanders, flags, reserve forces, and sometimes medical teams. These formations could consist of 500 to 1,000 men, typically arranged in a checkerboard pattern to avoid friendly fire. The infantry would unleash volley fire in sequence, rank by rank, to repel charging cavalry effectively.

One of the most famous uses of the hollow square was during the Battle of Waterloo, where Wellington’s army employed 500-man squares to withstand 11 ferocious cavalry charges. However, while incredibly effective against cavalry, the formation had one major weakness: artillery fire. A single well-placed canister shot could wreak havoc on the tightly packed soldiers. Despite this vulnerability, the hollow square remained one of the most iconic and successful formations of the era, showcasing the discipline and ingenuity of Napoleonic warfare.
