As you know, there has been a huge change in Africa’s and global geopolitics since the wave of coups began in Mail in 2020. Before then, Africa and Europe had a fairly stable relationship as Europe was Africa’s preferred partner in terms of trade and security. Europe and the West were assured of their influence in Africa and that their interest was protected. However, with the advent of coups which began in Mail and spread to other countries in Africa, the geopolitics and the order of things began to change, especially in the Sahel region. Some coup led countries including Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger began to have a different idea of how things should be done. The leaders of these countries exposed the flaw in Africa-Europe relations and began to shift from a West alliance to non-western alliance. This can be seen with how Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso cut off diplomatic relations with France, how Niger cut off military partnership with the US and how each of these nations have grown closer to Russia, China, Turkey and Iran.
This change has sent a message to the West that not every African country is willing to continue with the way things have been going. Now given this background, Denmark, one of the Scandinavian countries in Europe, made an announcement a few days ago. Denmark announced through its Foreign Ministry that it will close its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso. Now, Denmark shutting down its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso is not our concern because the fact is that it makes no difference to Burkina Faso or Mali’s economy and neither will it change the security status. Their presence in these countries have not brought any benefit to the country so they are free to go. However the reason why we want to talk about it, is because of the reason Denmark gave as to why they want to shut down their embassy. We are going to analyze the reason and pick out some important points that every African has to take note of. So, what reason did Denmark give? Why does Denmark want to shut down its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso?
