This is the Joyo Dark Flame pedal – an affordable high-gain overdrive/distortion pedal that the brand describes as being perfect for modern metal tones.

Get the Dark Flame here:

Now, I am no longer the world’s biggest metal guitar player, but I do enjoy high-gain and a bit of chug every once in a while. And when I do, I need my tones to be thick and aggressive, punchy yet clear and tight, and also for the pedal and my rig to not be too noisy. For years now, the Revv G3 has been my go-to for this. It’s simply an amazing pedal for all of the above, it’s always in my rig, and I’ve used it in almost all of my YouTube videos to date.

But then along comes the Dark Flame! And this pedal piqued my interest because it’s got a very similar layout to the G3 – three gain modes, a three-band EQ, and Volume/Gain controls. I suspected Joyo may have, let’s say, been influenced by the Revv when designing the Dark Flame – and when I plugged in, I knew straight away that I was right.

All that means that the Dark Flame is a great sounding dirt box, of course – and cheap, at around €59. It does powerful metal sounds, thick hard rock tones and more, and in this video, I test it out with my Fender Telecaster and my Epiphone Les Paul for single coil and humbucker tones. Plus, I do a little A/B comparison with the Revv G3 as well, just to hear how close we can get the two pedals to sound!

Check out the Revv G3 here by the way, it’s awesome:

My setup was as follows: I ran the Dark Flame straight into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. That went from the amp’s Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my TC Electronic Ditto Looper to play the loops.

Here’s some links to those bits of gear:

Enjoy!
